Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson have officially been confirmed to return in Thor: Love and Thunder. Last seen in Avengers: Endgame in the company of the Guardians of the Galaxy, Thor’s future role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is still unknown after leaving Valkyrie in charge of Asgard. Thor’s last solo film, Thor: Ragnarok reignited interest in Thor and all-but-guaranteed the Asgardian’s story would continue with more solo films down the line.
While there has been plenty of speculation that Thor would become the newest member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, that doesn’t mean Marvel Studios has given up on producing more Thor solo movies. Only recently, director Taiki Waititi was confirmed as returning to not only helm Thor 4, but write the script for the film as well. The announcement of Waititi’s involvement with Thor 4 may have pushed back his Akira movie indefinitely, but with how well-received Ragnarok was, fans are sure to be excited to have Waititi back. Now that Hemsworth and Thompson are also signed on, the hype for the next Thor movie can really start to build.
During the Marvel Studios panel at San Diego Comic-Con, Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson were confirmed to return as Thor and Valkyrie for Thor: Love and Thunder, releasing in November 2021. While this isn’t all that surprising given how popular both Hemsworth’s and Thompson’s portrayals are, this is the first official word of their involvement in a Thor 4. However, Hemsworth will not be the only Thor in the movie – Natalie Portman is also confirmed as returning to play Jane Foster and a female-version of Thor!
With Portman returning as Jane Foster, Thor 4’s new subtitle of Love and Thunder makes a lot more sense. Surely, Thor is going to have some complicated feelings about Jane’s return – and that’s even before factoring in that she is now Thor. Jane Foster being found worthy to wield Mjolnir raises a lot of questions (like, how is there a new Mjolnir?), but in the case of Thor Odinson, it raises questions about his position as the God of Thunder. Ragnarok saw Thor learn to harness his power without his hammer, but if Jane is now Thor then… who is the Odinson?
As for Valkyrie, she’s sure to find Thor being replaced by a woman both perfectly right and hilarious. As the ruler of Asgard, it’s possible Valkyrie even has a role in Jane becoming Thor, recognizing that the realms still need the protection of a God of Thunder. With the Odinson off gallivanting across the galaxy with the Guardians, Valkyrie may somehow have a new Mjolnir constructed that then seeks out Jane. However it happens, there’s a new Thor in town and we can’t wait to see how both the original Thor and Valkyrie react in Thor: Love and Thunder.
